Automatix
UPDATE (11/05/2005 11:25 PM ET): Automatix updated to version 3.0.2 Please redownload and reinstall
Latest version (3.0.2) has the following bugfix:
a) a bugfix in the firestarter and gdesklets function.
b) removed totem firefox plugin (mplayer is a better option)
Please note: Automatix makes u set your ROOT password the first time u install version 3.0.2 (I had to do this cuz some things just refuse to work with sudo and hence have to be forced to work with su). Wherever, u need your ROOT password while running automatix, terminal will say so. Where it doesnt ask, just enter your USER password.

tar xzf automatix-ubuntu_v3.0.tar.gzcd Automatix./install
To uninstall Automatix, do the following (NEW):
cd Automatix./uninstall
Howto remember which options In Automatix u have already checked in the past :
cat $HOME/automatix.log
Please NOTE:
Automatix does not support ppc (powerpc) and AMD64 packages. If it works for u, well and good but if it doesnt, I am sorry but since Ubuntu itself does not fully support these architectures, I cannot do anything about it.
Kubuntu: Users can test this script on Kubuntu (some users have reported problems on Kubuntu) but they need to install a few deps (which DO NOT come preinstalled with kubuntu) to make this script work. To install these deps do the following from terminal:
sudo apt-get install zenity gksu gnome-terminal
I have not tested Automatix on Kubuntu, and as it appears, I will have to rewrite a large fraction of Automatix if I want to port it to Kubuntu. As u must have noticed, most of the packages on Automatix are Gnome (Ubuntu) based and will take 100 MB downloads on Kubuntu to make them work fully. I dont use KDE myself but I do plan to port Automatix to Kubuntu (KDE) sometime in the future. Again, if it works for u on Kubuntu, well and good. if it doesnt, I am sorry but I cant help u right now.

Please suggest more apps and tweaks that u want to see included in this script. But please exclude the following:
A) Anything and everything that includes compiling from source code. I WILL NOT add any such capability to Automatix.
B) Anything and everything that includes editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Please bear in mind that xorg.conf was created keeping the human user in mind (and manual editing), and NOT shell scripting. Hence, editing it with a bash script is quite dangerous in certain cases. I will not undertake any such venture.
Please report all bugs to me directly (send me private messages) or post here in this thread.
